Chords in a key & pairings
Diatonic chords for the key. Click a chord to load its voicings above and light it up on the fretboard. Below: progressions that live in this key.
Circle of fifths
Click a key. Outer ring = major, inner = relative minor. Neighbours share 6 of 7 notes β that's why moving one step around the circle sounds smooth, and why IV and V are the "closest" chords to I.
Key of C major
CAGED system
Any major chord can be played in 5 shapes that tile the whole neck: C, A, G, E, D β in that order going up. Each shape connects to the next (they share notes at the boundary). Learn the shapes β you know where the chord tones are everywhere β your solos land on chord tones. The pentatonic/major scale "boxes" sit on top of each shape.
Modes of the major scale
Same 7 notes, different home base. Start the C major scale on D and treat D as home β that's D Dorian. The "flavor" comes from where the half-steps fall relative to the new root. Click a row to put it on the fretboard.
